Dr. Jorge Sefair is an Associate Professor in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida. He is an expert in operations research, optimization, and mathematical programming, with research focused on developing theory and algorithms to address complex challenges in environmental planning, public policy, urban planning, and service systems.
His work includes network, robust, multistage, and integer optimization, with a particular interest in designing resilient systems that can maintain critical levels of operation under uncertainty and adverse conditions. Dr. Sefair's research is highly interdisciplinary, spanning collaborations across engineering, public health, ecology, biology, and economics.

Data-Driven Workforce Optimization and Queue Management:
Applications to TSA Security Screening
Airport security and efficiency remain top priorities for U.S. federal and state security agencies. The University of Florida's Center for Applied Optimization and Arizona State University's Center for Accelerating Operational Efficiency, part of the Department of Homeland Security's Centers of Excellence, have partnered to address the challenging problem of dynamic workforce assignment for TSA screening checkpoints.
Such multiphase modeling engines are key components of multi-day planning horizons and just-in-time resource and personnel allocation. The material in this presentation is based upon work supported by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under Grant Award Number 17STQAC00001-08-03.
